Prime Minister Forbes Burnham visited a Peking hospital yesterday to meet with Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai at whose invitation the Head of State and his party are visiting the People’s Republic of China. Radio Peking reported that Chinese Vice-Premier Teng Hsaio-Ping and Foreign Minister Chiao Kuan-Hua were also present at the meeting.

Observers believe Prime Minister Burnham and Premier Zhou talked mainly about bilateral affairs. Mr. Zhou has spent the past 10 months in hospital.

The Prime Minister and Chinese Vice-Premier Teng also held their first round of talks yesterday afternoon. Mr. Burnham is expected to spend today having talks with Chinese leaders in Peking before leaving the capital tomorrow for a tour of the provinces, taking in the Chinese agricultural model commune of Tachai, Shanghai – the world’s biggest metropolis – and the southern city of Canton.

On March 18th he leaves for Hong Kong to fly to Britain foran official visit lasting until March 23rd.
Guyanese diplomatic sources in Peking said the visit “comes at a time on increasingly friendly relations between the two countries,” and a trade or economic agreement might result.

The official People’s Daily yesterday carried an Editorial warmly welcoming Mr. Burnham and saying that China was “pleased and encouraged by the achievements the people of Guyana have made.”

“We note with pleasure that the friendly relations and cooperation between China and Guyana have developed satisfactorily since the establishment of diplomatic relations
between the two countries,” the Editorial said.
