Guyana and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic relations on the 27th June 1972. Since that time relations between the two countries have expanded and have been productive in such important areas as the economy, politics, culture, economics ties and people-to-people relations.

The area of China is approximately 9.6 million square kilometers (3.7 million square miles) with a population of approximately 1.6 billion people.

Prime Minister Forbes Burnham Visits China

Prime Minister Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Mrs. Viola Burnham paid an official visit to the People’s Republic of China from March 12th to 17th, 1975.

Welcoming the distinguished Guyanese guests at the airport upon their arrival in the Chinese capital were Vice-Premiers Teng Hsiaoping and Chen Yungkuei, Vice-Chairman Tan Chen-lin of the Standing Committee orated with welcome slogans: “Firm support for the Guyanese people in their struggle to safeguard national independence and state sovereignty!”, “Long live the friendship between the peoples of China and Guyana!”, “Long live the great unity of the third world people!”, “Long live the great unity of the people of the world!
